Safety Manager
Bison USA is looking for a Safety Manager to join their team!
The Safety Manager is responsible for promoting the safe and efficient operations of the fleet; monitoring the everyday practices for DOT compliance; maintaining proper documentation and retention; and overseeing accident and safety issues. This person is responsible for implementing and executing safety programs that effectively lead the company’s safety culture. Must provide sound leadership and management to ensure compliance with DOT regulations and company policies in an over-the-road and dedicated transportation environment. While maintaining wide ranging skills, knowledge and abilities related to safety and compliance, Safety Managers are assigned main focus areas including: Driver Services, Safety Programs, Compliance, Facilities and Driver Development.
Key Responsibilities:
Driver Safety:
- Develop, implement, and supervise the company Driver Safety Program.
- Communicate with drivers regarding core safety principles and accident avoidance.
- Manage the driver qualification process while ensuring documentation related to Commercial Motor Vehicle Records, DOT physicals, National Registry, Drug and Alcohol Clearinghouse and Drug and Alcohol testing are maintained appropriately.
- Monitor compliance with Hours-of-Service regulations, ELD usage, pre/post trip inspections and FMCSA.
- Participate in new driver orientation.
- Administer/Oversee the coaching of drivers based on performance/safety issues.
- Run safety bonuses and review for disqualification (Inspections, Citations, Accidents.)
- Oversee compilation and distribution of permit books.
- Ensure 24/7 On-call status for driver & safety related issues.
Accident Response:
- Conduct post-accident and post-injury investigations; root cause analysis; and ensure proper completion of required documentation and reporting to the proper agencies.
- Assist and cooperate in the preparation of material and evidence for organization use in hearings, lawsuits, and insurance investigations.
- Represent the company in post-accident proceedings.
Compliance:
- Ensuring that all established policies and procedures are adhered to. This is accomplished by having a firm understanding of existing policy and procedures, communication, training, and clear direction to team members, and being knowledgeable in the basic structure and operating procedures of each department.
- Perform periodic audits of the Safety Program to ensure safety policies and procedure compliance.
- Ensure compliance with OSHA regulations and handle DOT complaints under the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations

Licensing & Permitting – Add and delete as needed and file annual renewals including any decals and decal replacements.

Plans and implements programs to train managers and employees in work site safety practices, fire prevention, and correct handling techniques for chemical, toxins, equipment, and other material.
Employee Relations:
- Strategically partner with department managers to continually improve driver safety, driver retention and customer service.
- Aid in developing positive relations throughout the company.
Leadership:
- Lead and manage other members of the safety department.
- Ensure safety and compliance program objectives/goals are met.
- Provide input to the executive level regarding the establishment of goals/programs.
- Provide continuing assessment of established goals/programs by recognizing current and potential issues and needs, geographical issues, as well as competitive advantages and disadvantages.
- Represent Bison USA in community or industry safety groups and assist when Transport Police have special events.
Supervisory:
- Directly supervise Safety members.
- Responsible for interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.
- Fills in for the Director of Safety during his/her absence.
Other:
- Engage in other projects and activities as necessary to the position and as assigned by your supervisor.
- Participate in and contribute to all other tasks and initiatives as is necessary and as it relates to the goals of the company. i.e., Committees, work, and focus groups.
